BURNT SUGAR is a territory band, a neo-tribal thang, a community hang, a society music guild aspiring to the condition of all that is molten, glacial, racial, spacial, oceanic, mythic, antiphonal and telepathic. A cross between The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Toni Morrisons Sula and Gong Li in Raise The Red Lantern subtly blended with Dave Chappelle singing the symphonic works of Phillp Glass and Anthony Braxton after T-Rex versus Ziggy Stardust versus John Coltrane's Live In Japan got flipped on the George Foreman grill by Little Richard, Sylvester and Mott The Hoople, who then marinated the joint in a trans-fat free fatback pool being quite fragrantly used as a hot tub by Swamp Dogg, Shorty Long, Glenn Goins and Moms Mabley over at Franz Fanon's last known safehouse in the Congo/this not to mention the prescence of other random chunks of Afro-Diasporic and Dravidian DNA deposited with love and happiness like hazardous waste on the doorsteps of the CIA.
8:00 PM: Egdetveit & Swift Johan Egdetveit – Accordion/Composition Mazz Swift (of MazzMuse) – Violin/Vocals
Originally conceived as music for a modern dance piece for 2 dancers (by choreographer Marit Sandsmark), The I As a Result of You is a six movements suite composed by Johan Egdetveit for accordion and violin. The piece incorporates elements of Jazz, Classical Avant-Garde and Folk music with a touch of improv. Through the interplay between the parts of the two players, Egdetveit masterfully demonstrates not only the breadth of diversity of sound each instrument makes but also the depth and complexity of the sound they make together.
9:00 PM: Monkeyworks Kevin Brown - Bass Alan Camlet - Drums Jeff Eldredge - Accordion/Harmonium/Keys Steve Meltzer - Percussion/Electronic Percussion Steve Peckman - Reeds Jim Stagnitto - Trumpet/Cornet Ian Smit – Guitar
Monkeyworks is a seven piece instrumental ensemble that embodies an "original blend" of many musical styles. While the sound has characteristics of Jazz, Rock, African, Cajun, Middle Eastern, and Ambient Music, the driving force behind Monkeyworks is the group chemistry. The result is a "whole greater than the sum of its parts" atmosphere. The "blend" at any given moment may be like nothing you've heard before, yet the music remains accessible. Imagine Weather Report or Oregon melding with The Meters, Dollar Brand and the Mahavishnu Orchestra - with a touch of Trip Hop, and some beautifully noisy chunks of skronk.
