| Festival Description | Initiated in 1997 by the Maison des Cultures du Monde and held during the months of March and April each year, the Festival de l’Imaginaire marshals the energies and enthusiasm of several Parisian, regional and European organisations working in the field of world cultures. An open arena for diverse peoples to showcase their least known or most treasured forms of expression, the Festival de l’Imaginaire reflects our three-pronged approach to programming: exploration, discovery and revelation; and this by striving to kindle the viewers’ curiosity incessantly. Another singularity of the Festival de l’Imaginaire is that most of the events programmed here are performed for the first time in France, whichever category they fall into : erudite or widespread, traditional or contemporary, minimalist or sophisticated. Some events, however, mark a “comeback” after several years of absence : either to cater to the desires of a new generation of spectators or to introduce new talents to the international scene. During the festival, thus, it is not uncommon to watch great masters, guardians of tradition, performing alongside young artists eager to enrich and revive age-old art forms. The Festival de l’Imaginaire is also a forum for reflection and for debate. Symposiums, round tables, conferences, lecture-demonstrations, and other activities, highlighting issues of cultural interest or on social concerns, are very much a part of the Festival, and offer new landmarks, thus broadening our vision of the world. |
