| Festival Description | In 2008, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival will concentrate on the history of string quartets. The second theme on the Festival programme focuses on kings and aristocrats. This theme will be highlighted by, among others, John Downland’s Lachrimae, J.S. Bach’s Das Musikalische Opfer, W.A. Mozart’s Prussian Quartets and music by Beethoven, Boccherini and Haydn, as well as Wagner’s operas. Featured on the programme will be a wide range of string quartets—from the first ever composed string quartet to the last one, a novelty which will have its first performance at the festival. Further, the programme will include works belonging to the repertoire of the most renown quartet of all times, including Joseph Haydn, violin, Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, violin, W.A. Mozart, viola and Johann Vanhall, cello. Among the items on the programme are the Quartets by Joseph Joachim and Eugène Ysaÿe, an inspiration for the programme planner. A last effort on the last day of the Festival: the performance of a work by Mozart for, among others, four String quartets and French horns. In 2008 the Kuhmo Festival’s quartets include the Uusi Helsinki Quartet, as well as the Meta4, Artis, Brentano, Enescu and Danel Quartets. |
