The Hay Festival in Xalapa features a program of the best local, national and international artists. The festival is a sister festival of the original festival that takes place on Hay on Wye in the United Kingdom. The festival is known worldwide for its open and welcoming atmosphere where cultural conversations, meetings and debates in the realms of literature, cinema, journalism, history and science take place. In addition to the discussions there are performances in music, visual arts exhibitions and workshops for students lead by writers, film-makers and artists.

- For five days Xalapa comes alive with talks, debates and stories from Wole Soyinka, Enrique Vila-Matas, Janne Teller, Marcos Giralt Torrente, Jeanette Winterson, Evelio Rosero, Elsa Osorio, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Valeria Luiselli and Roberto Ampuero. Journalism will be highlighted in the program to acknowledge the risks taken by brave journalists in Mexico and all over the world. Jon Lee Anderson, Ed Vulliamy and Guillermo Osorno will discuss their work and speak about the importance of freedom of information and the rights of journalists.
