In 2008 The Aarhus Festival Theme is—Open City. According to the Hague Convention (for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict) a city, which is declared open, cannot be attacked by military forces. During World War II both Paris and Rome were declared open cities in order to protect important cultural values. By selecting this theme the Aarhus Festival hopes to initiate a discussion about the cultural values of Aarhus, i.e. which ones should be protected and why. Inevitably, this discussion will also be about identity and how we look upon ourselves as modern human beings in a global world. Within the framework of the Open City theme it is our ambition to present a wide range of leading edge and unique events where you will have to go to Aarhus to take part.
