Festival Story:

Over the years, a great tradition occurred in May of each year to invite traditional Lithuanian folk art lovers to a celebration in the capital of Vilnius city and in Kaunas city. The Folklore Festival has been held in Kaunas since 1984. Since 2005 “Atataria lamzdžiai” has been called the International Folklore Festival. Each year the international festival selects a theme by which the programming is designed.

Over the years the festival has grown, strengthened, made its traditions, and developed a certain structure. The events take place in concert halls, town squares, in other open spaces. A procession through the main streets of the city offers a unique improvised celebration each year — attractive for guests and citizens alike. In the craft workshops folklore ensembles from different countries train festival attendees about their dances and songs. Dance evenings are enjoyable for communication, sharing traditions and expressions.

The festival focuses on children as well — those who will continue the tradition of the people, and one of the festival’s concerts is dedicated to children’s folk music. Participants of the festival are the best of Lithuanian folk songs, instrumental folk music performers and folk ensembles. International Folklore Festival “Atataria lamzdžiai” was decorated, varied by occasional concerts of guests from different countries: the folklore of Poland, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, USA, Finland, Estonia, Belarus and others.
