Highlighted artists 2013:
  • Jess Reimer
    • A rootsy songstress from the wilds of Manitoba, Jess Reimer has spent the last year collaborating closely with Bob Wiseman (Blue Rodeo) to create her sophomore record, which features contributions from Ron Sexsmith and Keri Latimer. A real-deal country rose about to blossom right under your nose. Reimer’s 2011 debut LP, Sweet Darling and Sorrow, is her winter landscape – stripped, subtle songs rooted in country and folk, stunning in their simplicity. Her output to-date has earned acclaim from outlets like Penguin Eggs; official showcase slots at the Folk Alliance International Convention and OCFF; shared bills with the likes of The Good Brothers, Loudon Wainwright III, Peter Rowan, Hayes Carl, and Tony Rice; and appearances in front of audiences at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, and Winnipeg Folk Festival.
  • Nuela Charles
    • Nuela Charles is a Canadian-Swiss and Kenyan singer-songwriter whose music crosses boundaries and unites musical genres. Be it hip-hop, pop, jazz, R&B or soul, Nuela captures the spirit and confidence of them all. Aware released October 23, 2012, is the culmination of the introspective journey into Nuela’s current state of being and the total surrender of that which cannot be controlled – life. With empowering, anthem tracks like “Take It Or Leave It” and “The Good In Me,” to the cinematic and inquisitive “Final Round” and “Traveling Heart” – this 2013 Western Canadian Music Award nominated album, is dark, moody and uplifting at the same time.
  • Willie Stratton & The Boarding Party
    • Halifax’s Willie Stratton & The Boarding Party are a howling, seething hurricane of ferocious folk music. A songwriter of instinct, Willie Stratton has a flair for writing catchy songs that leave the listener moved by the raw emotion in them. Although his roots are firmly placed in folk and blues, he draws inspiration from many different lyrical and musical influences. “It was like taking bits and pieces of The Lumineers and Mumford and Sons and blending them in with some Arcade Fire” - Halifax.com
  • The Almighty Rhombus
    • The 5 piece pop band who are ready to rock Halifax Pop Explosion 2013. Three of the members are brothers, and they are all proud to be from Sudbury, which is a much cooler city than people give it credit for. They have a new album coming out in October called Lucid Living, to complement the EP they released last year. Drawing from the smooth doo-wop 1940s, to the rock and roll of the 50s, to the psychedelia and gritty garage of the 60s, to the prog, punk and arena rock of the 70s, the shiny new-wave 80s, the powerpop of the 90s, and the garage resurgence of the early 2000s, The Almighty Rhombus synthesizes these elements effortlessly.
