Artist feature 2013:
  • Mike & the Mellotones
    • The band was founded in 1993 at a Texas blues trio by singer/guitarist Mike ‘The Kid’ Donkers and bass player Jules ‘Lord Julius’ van Brakel in addition to Jules’s rhythm partner, Guido ‘El Guido’ Willemsen who was brought in as their drummer. Shortly thereafter Mike coined the band’s name — Mike & the Mellotones based on their idols Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble and Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets.
When Mike & the Mellotones came on the Dutch blues scene they sported greased-back hairdos, Fender Stratocasters and sharp suits, introducng Dutch blues audiences (and soon international blues enthusiasts) to their particular brand of Texas blues. They took the blues scene by storm, often playing long sets for wild crowds.
In 1996, Dutch blues label Lizard Disks signed the band and released a live debut album entitled Live Magic. During that same year, the band became friends with ‘Monster’ Mike Welch, who was then new on the scene as a 16-year-old blues sensation. They worked together on the second album of Mike & the Mellotones (1997). During that period Guido left the band, to be replaced by Rens ‘El Lorenzo’ Hardijzer. With Lorenzo behind the drumkit the band produced a powerful third album, Thumbs up! (1999). A live album entitled Wild Live Action (2002) featured Texan guest players Mike Morgan and Gary Primich and Australian guest musician Geoff Achison.
Following some natural growing pains the band members changed, and new directions were experimented upon to achieve their own unique approach. Jules left the band in 2003, after 10 years of being an original Mellotone. In 2006 an album whose focus was classic & southern rock influences under the name of The Mellotones, resulted in an album called Not The Same. In 2009 Ruben Klabbers, Jaap ‘Skimpy Jizzle’ Lagerweij returned to the blues and reformed Mike & the Mellotones with bass player Mike Sedee and drummer Rens Hardijzer. Their return to their original blues and trio sound felt like coming home. Mike Sedee was replaced by Erwin ‘Lefty Zennings’ van Gestel. Mike Donkers reunited with co-founder of Mike & the Mellotones, and brought in Enrico Crivellaro, a blues picker from Italy to participate on their latest CD (2012) — enitled 1 + 1 = 3.
