Festival Description

The Illawarra Folk Festival is an award winning tourism event of national standing that began in 1985. Since then it has grown to include over 400 folk performers and 150 events that include concerts, dances, workshops, storytelling, street theatre, poetry and comedy sessions, acoustic jams, a children’s festival and special events. The festival takes place over three days and four nights at 12 venues located in the historic town of Bulli on the South Coast of NSW. The festival celebrated its 21st birthday in the new location of Bulli after 20 festivals in Jamberoo.

Venue program changes:
  • The festival starts with a Bush Dance on Wednesday night at the Heritage Hotel, followed by Italian lunch on Thursday, and a Charity Concert and the Tripe Eaters Concert. Three full days then follow starting at 8:00am through to late in the 12 venues! There will be more than 250 events.
  • There are a number of changes including:
    • Setting up a children’s tent rather than using the Greyhound Kennels;
    • The Betting Ring becomes the ‘Nlack Diamond Shanty’;
    • A large 600 seater white tent on the central area of showground instead of the tent at the back of the horse stables;
    • The Horse Stables is to become a concert/blackboard concert known as the Nag’s Lounge, complete with lounges and refreshements;
    • The Village Green is to become the Global Green and supported by Illawarra Ethnic Communities Council. It will have multicultural and traditional dancing demonstrations, music, dances and workshops. It will also have a specially (and expensive) sprung wooden floor in Scandinavian summer dance style;
    • The Festival Shop will be located in the grandstand bar area
