Festival Sv. Marka
The St. Marcus Festival’s diverse and interesting program involves the participation of Croatian and foreign artists and ensembles. The basic idea is that music performances of top-level artists are held in concert and church halls of Zagreb’s “lower and upper” town. The Festival is also becoming a festival of interaction between Croatian musical tradition and its present with European and world musical tradition and contemporary performing craftsmanship.
As musicians, who have been active in the St. Marcus Church and the Upper Town for twenty years now, we have decided to revive the old-time atmosphere of the Upper Town and its central festivity by creating the “St. Marcus Festival”. Its pivotal part should be a number of attractive concerts performed by distinguished internationally recognized musicians; the idea is also to provide a platform for promising young artists with a rising international reputation. Within the framework of these concerts some other events may take place: a fair, exhibitions, lectures, street happenings, etc., which would evoke the lively atmosphere of the past.
The performances of Croatian ensembles, have throughout these past years been more than interesting and of very high quality, since they were comprised of many young Croatian musicians, such as the “Croatian Brass Quintet”, the “Zagreb Symphonietta”, the “Zagreb Horn Ensemble”, the “Folk Singers” from Stari Grad on the island of Hvar, Alen Kopunović Legetin, the “Zagreb Saxophone Quartet”, Lovro Pogorelić.This is how the Festival started gaining characteristics of a musical event with a genuine international weight, with an idea of strengthening the middle European musical atmosphere.
