Juneteenth celebates African American Independence, commemorated on June 19, 1865 when slaves of the western territories learned of their freedom 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The day was celebated for ten days with story-telling, skill sharing, and prayers of thanksgiving. The Juneteenth festival has been known as Juneteenth Jamboree and is now called Juneteenth Blues Cabaret. |
