| Festival Description | The Ruhr Theater Festival began in 1946 when miners gave coal to artists in exchange for the artist’s performances. The solidarity among the two groups who greatly benefited from the swap continues into the modern day—with audiences embracing the artists for all that they give of themselves. The Ruhr Festival has since moved from musical performances to now embrace the dramatic arts and has become one of the biggest and longest-standing theatre festivals in Europe. The artistic director, Frank Hoffmann, oversees that the festival adheres to the highest standards of featuring quality performances within an ambitious program. Well known actors morph into a rich cast of characters by bringing them to life, and up-and-coming talents sink their teeth into works to further develop their craft. Each year the festival features a playwright. In addition to the main festival program, there is are Fringe events to enjoy, lectures, and more. |
