| Festival Description | As one of the leading festivals in the UK and celebrating its 37th year in 2013, the prestigious St Magnus International Festival brings international orchestras, recitalists, theatre and literature to the Orkney Islands for a week around midsummer and is renowned for its unique blend of world-class performance and community participation. The Festival attracts capacity audiences from across the UK and beyond to events held in Kirkwall’s magnificent medieval St Magnus Cathedral, the Italian Chapel and other venues across the islands. The 2013 Festival will see a summer celebration of folk tales, myths and legends coming to Orkney with symphony orchestra, ensembles, music theatre, cabaret opera and burlesque. 2013 also sees a celebration of the life of the Orcadian explorer John Rae. Interwoven with the Festival there are courses for young professional composers, conductors, singers and writers with participants drawn from all over the world and open sessions for festival goers to watch. Most Festival events take place in Kirkwall or Stromness, which are 15 miles apart. On weekdays and Saturdays there is a regular day-time bus service (details from the Tourist Information Centres in Kirkwall or Stromness). On Festival Sunday, transport to and from Stromness is provided. |
