URKULT first took place in 1994 and the festival has since become increasingly popular. Many people consider URKULT to be the best “world music” festival in Sweden. After the 10th anniversary in 2004 it was decided to limit the number of tickets issued to 5,000 in order to preserve the intimate atmosphere of this very special festival. Tickets are only sold in advance.
The festival area is beautifully located high above the river Ångermanälven. There are three stages on the festival the area with performances from early afternoon to late into the night. Within the area there are also other activities, for both children and adults and a wide range of eateries where you can buy food and drink. The festival area is just outside the village of Näsåker. In the village proper you can attend concerts, workshops, theatre performances, lectures and excursions.
This year has been proclaimed “Multi cultural Year” in Sweden and in this multicultural spirit URKULT will focus on some of the many great musicians from other cultures that live here in the Nordic countries. URKULT will make a large contribution this year to “Clowns without Borders” which is a sister organisation to the international “Payasos sin Fronteras”.
