| Festival Description | Ekon Arts is dedicated to exploring new artistic possibilities in contemporary sound and performing arts in ways that combine live art with current technologies. It proposes different contexts for engaging with art through the lens of contemporary Greek culture, while at the same time maintaining an international character, attracting creators and performers from diverse backgrounds. Ekon Arts promotes collaborative artistic and educational projects, joint productions or interactive works that bring together artists, community art groups and cultural institutes. For 2012, Ekon Arts and Anasa Productions have collaborated to produce diVERSIONS, a brand new festival of contemporary music that adds a bit of spike and chaos to London’s music scene. It aims to bring together some of the most innovative and prominent art practitioners emerging from the Greek and international world today, covering a wide spectrum of musical styles and 21st century audio-visual productions. We want to present a new generation of music-makers, to showcase the vitality and diversity of the music they create. We want diVERSIONS to attract anyone with an interest in the musical zeitgeist. diVERSIONS 2012 is a 3-day music spectacle featuring the brilliant, the naughty, and the wild of the Greek international music scene. An explosion of sound and image from an extraordinary array of musicians, performers and multi-media artists, presenting an eclectic mix of electro, punk, powerpop, indie rock, trip hop, jazz, R n B, and visual elements. |

- The trio, featuring drummer Asaf Sirkis, Tassos Spiliotopoulos on guitar and Jonathan Harvey on bass will be playing at the diVERSIONS. Asaf Sirkis — The drummer, composer was born in 1969 in Petah-Tikva, Israel. Asaf later moved to the town of Rehovot, where he spent his teens and early twenties. This was an influential move for Asaf, as it was here amongst the diverse cultural influences he found in Rehovot that Asaf began to show an interest in music and rhythm. In Rehovot he lived amongst people from North Africa, east and central Europe, and the Middle East. Living in Shaarayim, the Yemenite neighbourhood in Rehovot, Asaf was particularly drawn to Yemenite culture, music, and rhythms. At the age of 12 Asaf began drum lessons, while also having a strong interest in playing electric bass. The music that influenced Asaf at the time still influences his writing and playing till this day; The Beatles, Police, Yes, Genesis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Allan Holdsworth, and Weather Report to name a few. Asaf started his professional career as a musician playing with many different young Jazz-Rock, Kleizmer, world music, and Free Jazz bands. During that time he co-operated with Israel’s local Jazz/world luminaries such as Harold Rubin, Albert Beger, Yair Dlal and Eyal Sela. In October 1998 Asaf left Israel and eventually settled in London in April 1999. He soon become part of the UK Jazz and world music scene, and started working with Adel Salameh, a Palestinian aud player/composer with whom he recorded the album ‘Nuzha’ which featured Asaf’s Middle Eastern frame drum playing.
