| Festival Description | Daidougei is the Japanese word for street peformance or busking. The first Daidogei World Cup in Shizuoka was held in 1992 after 3 years of planning. The number of visitors, 1.5 million, was beyond the executive committee’s imagination. It hasn’t stopped growing since, it has definitely begun to spread throughout Japan with visiors from outside of the prefecture in creasing every year and an economic effect reaching 280 million yen. All performers must go through a selection process where only the best can perform here. There are three competition-based categories of performances-World Cup. The goal is to plant, nurture and establish within the minds and hearts of the people of Shizuoka the seeds that allow one to feel the culture and art-sensivity with an international outlook. The festival uses the street corners and parks as its stage and is supported by many volunteers, resident clowns, commercial sponsors, government, many fantastic audience members (who sometimes become performers) and performers from all over the world. |
