Festival Description

Sonar began in 1994 as the creation of Sergio Caballero, Enric Palau and Ricard Robles. Palau and Caballero were experienced music makers, constructing soundtracks and original compositions while Ricard Robles was a professional journalist. It may have been the attributes of the individuals themselves, or the wide spectrum of art and music afforded by the vibrant backdrop of their local Barcelona, or even the transitions in technology that characterised the later stages of the 1990’s that enabled Sonar to develop into a truly original festival concept. In reality it was probably a combination of all of the above. This is the biggest and most important Spanish manifestation in the electronic music.

Featured artists 2010:
  • AIR
    Barcelona, Friday June the 18th
A Coruña, Saturday June the 19th
    • Atmospheric savoir-faire
At Sónar 2010, Air will be presenting their extensive repertoire of hits and their new album “Love 2” (Virgin, 2009), an album that continues to plough the furrow carved out by the French duo in their now classic “Moon Safari” (1998): the fusion of proto-futuristic sixties and seventies pop with various quirks drawn from psychedelia, lounge music and soundtracks from underground European films. “Love 2” is the logical next step after Air’s previous albums “Talkie Walkie” (2004) and “Pocket Symphony” (2007), which were meticulously produced and delicate collections of synth-pop, with an all-enveloping melodic ingredient that has charmed all manner of listeners over the years. This is the first album by the Parisians Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin which does not feature any special guest appearances –vocalists, pianists, legends of French electronic music, etc., and as such it is a completely self-produced work, and their most personal project to date.
  • LCD SOUNDSYSTEM
A Coruña, Thursday June the 17th
    Barcelona, Friday June the 18th
    • New York Disco-punk
LCD Soundsystem will be bringing their exquisite disco-punk sound to the main Sónar by Night stage, in Barcelona and in A Coruña. The New York band led by the charismatic James Murphy, which is planning to release its third album during the first six months of 2010, is currently holed up in a Los Angeles studio, painstakingly recording the album which will follow on from “Sound of Silver” (DFA, 2007), one of the essential collections for understanding recent musical phenomena such as the reactivation of the eighties mutant disco and post-punk scene, the dialogue on equal terms between rock bands and DJs, and New York’s revitalisation as the engine of modernity, and which contains references to Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Larry Levan, Krautrock and Suicide all in equal measures. A version of “Bye bye Bajou” by Alan Vega, the vocalist of Suicide, is the latest material to be released by James Murphy, in an exclusive limited vinyl edition which is a taster for the complete album.
