| Festival Description | Copenhagen International Theatre has been presenting international theatre, dance and performance since 1980 in the context of more than 40 festivals since 1980. They are now embarking on a new phase of this work based on the theme of METROPOLIS—a new endeavor for the Theatre as the city of Copenhagen moves towards 2017 when it will once again host The European Capital of Culture. It is their aim that METROPOLIS will launch this year on a biennial basis and culminate in 2017. The program will begin on June 1st with a 1-day symposium. “The City as Stage and The Stage as the City” with Danish and international speakers looking at the overall tendencies and theories, current city practices and strategies (Berlin, Rotterdam/Amsterdam, Marseilles, Barcelona), and experiences from leading artists working in the field. The launch will be followed by The Metropolis Laboratory from July 25 - August 5, 2007. This will be the first of a series of annual urban summer laboratories and will include some 40 international participants (artists/architects) and 25 participants from Copenhagen. It will be structured over 10 days. Some of these will be individuals and some will be small groups of 2-3 people. The Lab itself will be “site specific” and located in a large industrial space in the downtown harbour area. The Public Events program will be the culmination of METROPOLIS’ each edition and will allow for audiences to become engaged in the process during the entire month of August. |
