Jazz came to Donetsk in 1969. Then the whole Soviet Union was watching Donetsk jazz festival. Suddenly, at the apex of its popularity, the festival disappeared. Fifteen long years of oblivion did not manage to destroy Donetsk jazz. A group of enthusiasts, headed by the future president of the festival Alexandr Syeryi have revived the legendary tradition. Now the festival take place in Donetsk and Kyiv.

Since 2001 the festival has been taking place annually. Industrial Donetsk is becoming an authentic national jazz capital, turning during the festival days into a postsoviet jazz Mecca. The head of the jury in the contest “Dо#Dж junior” (2001-2005) is consistently the professor of Gnesin Russian Music Academy, one of the best jazz performers and instructors Igor Bryl.
