The Kirishima International Music Festival, along with its accompanying master courses, was founded in 1980 by world-famous German violinist Professor Gerhard Bosse. Featuring participation by many local and foreign participants, the Festival provides participants with an opportunity to musically inspire themselves by organising various activities which includes a high quality workshop to which about 120 music students participate and the end of the workshop demonstrate the skills that they have gained in the workshop. The Festival features concerts by famous international musicians as well as local artists. Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi has been Music Director to the Festival since 2001.
