Festival Description

The International Handel Festival in Göttingen is the longest-standing Handel Festival in existence and one of Europe’s leading early music festivals. When the opera Rodelinda was staged in 1920, it was the first time that any opera by Handel had been performed since the composer’s death. The “Göttingen Handel Renaissance” had its origins in this event, that provided the means for the rediscovery of the operas of Georg Friedrich Handel. Ever since then, once a year the Handel Festival has transformed the university city of Göttingen into a vibrant centre of early music. Providing the central pillars of each year’s Festival are a Handel opera, oratorios, and orchestral, open-air and children’s concerts. The prestigious international performers guarantee the highest artistic standards. The Festival also stands out for its focus on historical performance practice, and for its attention to largely neglected works by Handel and his contemporaries.
