| Festival Description | Theaterzwang Festival is a biennial theater festival which takes place in North Rhine-Westphalia, the largest and most populated region of Germany. Initiated by the Cooperative Independent Theater NRW in 1985 it has become Germany’s oldest and best endowed competition for the off-theater scene with €49,000 in financial awards. What keeps the festival lively and unique is the ever-changing artistic direction. Each new theater personality who takes up the reins, steers the festival into new direction as they answer the question: “what makes for great theater?”. The festival is generously supported by the Cooperative of Independent Theater in NRW (Kooperative Freier Theater NRW, the Cultural Department of Dortmund City (Kulturbüro der Stadt Dortmund), the NRW Cultural Office (NRW Kultursekretariat), and the Art Foundation NRW (Kunststiftung NRW). |
