International Folk Festival Plovdiv is held in the well preserved Roman theatre at the edge of Plovdiv’s historic centre. Festivities commence with a parade of the participants through the main street of the city, beneath the hill of the Old Town. Stefan Stambolov Square is the scene of some performances, although the focus throughout the festival remains in the ancient theatre. The Bulgarian Folk Music & Dance Seminar in Plovdiv takes place at the Music Academy in Plovdiv and offers dance, singing, and instrumental classes throught the day. There is a daily (or weekly) charge for the seminar (classes are taught in English) and there is also a Bulgarian Language class every day. Usually there are students (of all ages 10 - 85) representing as many as 10-12 different countries. Folklore dance groups from Greece, Turkey, Romania, Serbia, Moldova, Russia, Georgia, Belarussia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, France, Egypt, Nigeria, Mexico, Puerto Rico, India, Ireland and other countries have participated in the past years.
