| Festival Description | Carnival in Rio is no doubt the most widely known carnival throughout the world. The festivities begin on a Saturday and continue, officially, for four days, ending on Fat Tuesday (or Shrove Tuesday). However, in many cities the festivities go for almost a week. Carnaval is celebrated throughout Brazil with the most renowned celebration taking place in Rio de Janeiro. Celebrants wear exquisitely decorated and colorful costumes. Even if one does not participate in dressing for the occasion—everybody is out dancing in the streets. The best costumes can be seen on Sunday and Monday of Carnival week in the specially constructed SAMBÓDROMO (in downtown—subway station Praça Onze). The shows start at 8:00pm and continue until 8:00am! Buy your tickets well in advance. Carnival is a must if you happen to be Brazil—and should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. |
