Festival Story:
Salto! took place for the first time in 1997 and became a huge success. By the second year it became one of Europe’s biggest festivals of its kind. Each year around 15,000 young spectators take their seats at about 150 showings of 10-15 contemporary dance pieces. Ocotber has become an intense month of dance in the region of Skåne.
From the start Salto! was a unique collaboration between a large number of organizations and dance companies, not only from the region—the companies are often from other parts of Sweden and sometimes also from other European countries. The idea of Salto! was born out of a number of suggestions—some Skåne municipalities wanting to have some kind of dance presentation in a joint effort, Dansstationen was just about to launch a project for dance for a young audience in the Öresund region together with Danish Dansescenen to promote dance in general. Since the very beginning Skånes Teaterförening (The Theatre Touring Organization of Skåne) has taken an active part in the extensive work of tour planning.
