Since 1981 Theater der Welt has taken place every three years in a different city in Germany. The important and prestigious festival has served as a launching pad for many artists — both from the national and international arena. Each edition of the festival is given new outlook and breath by a designated artistic director thereby making each festival entirely unique in the artistic choices and selections.

The 2010 festival breaks with the tradition of the triennial schedule since the venue of Ruhr in 2010 is the European Capital of Culture. The festival has been invited to take place in Ruhr as part of the festivities.

Participating artists come from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Oceania and represent all walks of life — from glorious and established cities to the small and quaint villages in rural regions. They include directors, choreographers, performers, dancers or musicians who include solo and group works but who as a collective will collaborate in the festivities. Theatre der Welt encourages these artists to experiment and work outside of the box that is free from aesthetic conventions.
