| Festival Description | As the founder and prime mover of the festival Lasse Söderberg continues to keep poetry alive through readings in conjunction with visual art exhibitions, and theatrical and musical performances. Since its founding the festival has become a highly regarded event in Sweden where the foremost poets of the world gather to share their work. Söderberg organized Poetry Days in 1987 in Malmö as a means to maintain this age-old form of expression. The emphasis this year will be on “old men” since they seem to be overlooked in this modern world. There will be readings, discussions and personal conversations with poets. The festival has had the honor of hosting Octavio Paz (Mexico), Derek Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago) and Seamus Heaney (Ireland), winners of the Nobel Prize for literature. More than 200 poets from more than 40 countries have taken part in the festival between 1987 and 1999. |
