Festival Story:
In 1974, in the town of Ginebra, Valle del Cauca, a group of people decided to organize a Competition of Colombian Andean music. Given the popularity and success of the first Competition, managers and some residents of Ginebra, Buga y Cali decided to create a foundation with the aim of managing the Competition, and according to the statutes: “To preserve, promote and disseminate Colombian Andean Music”. They also decided to name this Competition “Mono Núñez” in honor Benigno Núñez Moya, musician, and a great interpreter of the Bandola and the Guitar, composer, a native of Ginebra, then symbol of central valley music and bohemian, who with the years became a national legend. The Mono Núñez Competition has become a launching pad for our artists the mere fact to qualify for Ginebra is an important part of their résumé; much more, of course, to be nominated or winning the “Mono Núñez” Grand Prix. EL MONO NÚÑEZ also received the most important recognition at the national level awarded by the Senate, with the backing of the Presidency of the Republic, declaring it as CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE NATION in 2003.
