| Festival Description | Both an arts festival and a form of direct social mobilization against female genital mutilation (FGM), the Markala Masks and Marionnettes Festival, known by the acronym FESMAMAS, brings a fresh manner of combining art and social action to the rich tradition of such work that already exists in Africa. The richness of the mask and marionnette-based performances is more than matched by the intensity of the effort to heighten awareness of the inhumanity of FGM, with the specific goal of reaching those who perpetrate it. |
