The Bamako International Percussion Festival leaves its indelible mark on Mali's capital, transforming the events' various locations into living monuments to the rich musical traditions of the culture. Drumming artists from across the globe converge on the festival, bringing their own flavors of sound just as they pay homage to the specific varieties of sound and instruments of the host country. 2003's opening ceremony was marked by a statement of the festival's goals—to honor as well as to protect the indigenous music of a country and of a people.
