The Bamako Dance Festival's ultimate goal is to make Mali's vibrant capital city into "the crossroads of choreographic creativity and the guardian of West African dance's cultural heritage." In 2005, the theme of "Africa meets Africa" came up directly against the challenges of this goal; its success in so doing is measurable by the vibrancy of the festival's many events as well as the pure presence of dancers and choreographers from all across the African continent, marshaled by the festival's director, Kettly Noël.
