Festival Description

The Theyyam Festival of Payyannur celebrates the colourful ritual dance of Kerala, one of the oldest art forms in India. Incorporating dance, mime and music, Theyyam has its roots in ancient tribal culture, placing great importance on the worship of heroes and ancestral spirits. Theyyams are performed exclusively by the male members of the traditional caste groups. The dancers wear bizarre headdresses, costumes and body paint and enter a trance-like state while performing.
