The stories of the Carnival of Venice's origin are numerous—a celebration of life that dates to pagan times, a costume and mask were worn to allow the masses to poke fun at the wealthy class and thereby release social tensions, and since antiquity a day was set aside in Italy for the masses to let of steam by being allowed to "go mad at least once a year"—perhaps all these had a part to play in the Carnival's existence. This multi-disciplinary event involves music, dance and theater throughout the glorious city of Venice.
