Carbon-Free Off-set 2009:
  • The nation’s biggest music festival, the BIG DAY OUT is offering audience members the chance to offset their carbon emissions while at the festival, with the creation of a Carbon Free Day. Along with enjoying a day of spectacular music including Neil Young, My Morning Jacket, TV on the Radio, Arctic Monkeys, The Living End, The Prodigy and more, patrons can do their bit to slow the pace of climate change and be clean and green. To offset their BIG DAY OUT carbon footprint audience members can purchase a carbon credit when they buy their ticket online. The cost for the Carbon Free Day is just $1.34 and covers the cost of offsetting carbon through Mallee Eucalyptus tree plantations over the life of the trees. Ticket agency processing costs, credit card charges and GST are inclusive with no mark-ups from the BIG DAY OUT. The Carbon Free Day initiative has already been embraced by many with 20 percent of BIG DAY OUT ticket buyers opting to purchase carbon credits. This is an amazing result for a first time initiative and those ticket buyers should be commended.
  • The Carbon Free Day follows the BIG DAY OUT’s other environmental initiatives including reduced energy usage, proactive recycling on all sites, energy audits of the show, the planting of nearly 7000 Eucalyptus Polybractea (Blue Leaved Mallee) on approximately 4.5 hectares of land at Narromine in central NSW in 2007, and the planting of another 9,248 Eucalyptus Polybractea (Blue Leaved Mallee) at a property 10km outside Fifield in central west NSW in 2008.
  • An energy audit of the 2009 show is also planned and the BIG DAY OUT’s commitment to a “Carbon Offset” event into the future remains steadfast.
