Hairth o’ Knokrach
First Class World Music in the remote hill-scapes of Galloway—a WOMAD in the hills—Knockengorroch Festivals offer an exhilarating festival experience unparalleled across the UK. Set in a natural amphitheatre, the Hairth celebrates the multi-cultural commonality of roots music, welcoming the People to the Land, and the Music to the Hills! Over the three days the ‘World Ceilidh’ (May), and ‘The Hairth’ (September), present some of the most current sounds on the world and traditional music circuit, from the purist to the most experimental, bringing top quality acts to a secluded and beautiful corner of Scotland.
|Festival Dates||May 31 - June 3, 2012|
Four miles of twisty roads wind into the hills, ending with half a mile of farm track. Mobile phones lose their signals, the nearest bank machine is 10 miles away. With the celebrations in front of the great ‘Bo Airie’ stage, revellers and performers, city goers, nature lovers, young and old alike join ’Bo’, the virtuous cow, so revered by the pastoralists of the valley in times of old.
As well as enjoying top quality live music, festival goers can dance into the night with late night DJs in the ‘Shieling Summerhouse’ venue; try some real Scottish ales on tap at the Cabaret ‘Medwina’ Bar, with live cabaret into the early hours; enjoy a host of crafts and dance workshops or storytelling in the Celtic longhouse; go shopping and buy both global goods and local produce; visit a solar powered cinema; or just relax with a hot shower and a sauna in the healing area.
For musicians there is the traditional music sessions Berber Tent, and a chance to perform on the open mic. For parents the festival offers a dedicated children’s marquee and procession on the Sunday afternoon. Also featuring fire and dance performances, street/field theatre and the Nock Fit State Cabaret.
