Following the initiative of Claudio Abbado, since 1988 international composers, artists, interpreters and ensembles have been invited to present the wide variety and artistic creativity in the world of sound. Wien Modern is a festival of contemporary music and also provides a platform for Modern Dance, new visuals, texts and film. The Wien Modern Festival is a long-running, multidisciplinary, international festival of the arts. The events at the Alte Schmiede have been largely musical and literary. The musical evenings often highlight a single composer in a "Portrait" concert before an international audience.
