| Festival Description | A mouthwatering series of events that celebrates a rich program dedicated to Baroque music. This early music festival is known for presenting a varied program played with period instruments, and including the rediscovery of forgotten works. The festival takes place in St. John’s Smith Square, and Westminster Abbey. St. John’s is known for its pure acoustics. Westminster Abbey is a tourist destination under any circumstance. Every monarch since William the Conqueror has been crowned here, although usually more smoothly than his coronation. Williams’ was attended by both the French-speaking Normans and the English-speaking Saxons. When they began to shout their multi-lingual approval during the ceremony, the guards outside thought an assassination plot was in progress. They began to burn houses around the Abbey. Smoke filled Westminster. Crowds tried to flee and riots broke out. In all the chaos, William made sure the ceremony continued unabated. The festival’s music is just as historically intriguing, although it is a bit more calm. |
