Festival Description

Ludlow Festival offers a unique experience in open-air theatre in the truely glorious setting of Ludlow Castle. The festival celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and features Romeo and Juliet.

Musical highlights 2012:
  • Saturday, June 23 and throughout the Festival
    • At Ludlow Castle plus director Charlie Walker-Wise’s bespoke production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in which the spectacular ruins of Ludlow’s medieval castle are transformed into a VE Day celebration party.
  • Sunday, June 24
    • The opportunity to hear Handel’s Messiah in the ‘Cathedral of the Marches,’ St Laurence’s Church by Ensemble Sine Nomine, a talented choir of young professional singers from the Marches area.
  • Tuesday, June 26, and Thursday, June 28
    • Orchestra of the Swan will offer two fantastic Lunchtime Concerts celebrating Bach’s solo cello suites
  • Tuesday, June 26
    • The Glenn Miller Orchestra will present a sparkling showcase of wartime classics.
  • Wednesday, June 27
    • The Festival orchestra in residence, the critically acclaimed Orchestra of the Swan who will be playing a main concert.
  • Friday, June 29
    • BAFTA award-winning actress Miriam Margolyes celebrating the bi-centenary of one of Britain’s greatest ever writers, Charles Dickens, in her one woman show Dickens’ Women.
  • Saturday, June 30
    • We also welcome one of the most successful male voice choirs in Britain, The Fron Male Voice Choir who will be performing with Ludlow based professional soprano, Gemma Busfield.
Film program 2012:
  • The Festival are delighted to welcome authors and broadcasters Matthew Sweet and Mavis Nicholson as part of our first-ever film programme. This year, we celebrate British film icons Alfred Hitchcock, David Lean and Powell & Pressburger.

    • David Lean’s Great Expectations.
  • Monday, July 2
    • Radio 3 Night Waves presenter Matthew Sweet presents an illustrated talk on the secret history of the British Film Industry.
  • Wednesday, July 4
    • A screening of one of his favourite films, the 1942 classic, Went the Day Well and broadcaster turned author Mavis Nicholson, currently writing for The Oldie, shares forgotten tales of female bravery from WWII from her book, What Did You Do In The War Mummy?, before introducing Powell and Pressburger’s Technicolor fantasy, A Matter of Life and Death.

  • Sunday, July 1
    • Plus rising star Liam Dunachie performs with his jazz trio at the Ludlow Brewery.
  • Monday, July 2
    • Join Niamh Parsons in an exclusive singing workshop.
  • Tuesday, July 3
    • The brilliant Irish folk singer, Niamh Parsons, will be in concert.
  • Saturday, July 7
    • The Ludlow Choral Society celebrate the music of Broadway musicals in a special concert at a new venue to the Festival this year — the Ludlow Assembly Rooms.
Finale program 2012:
  • Sunday, July 8
    • Don’t miss our Last Night Finale which this year includes two top acts for the price of one! Björn Again headline this fantastic party night at Ludlow Castle, performing ABBA’s hits as the sun sets. Björn Again will be supported by top Queen tribute act, Killer Queen, who return to the Festival by popular demand. As always, the evening closes with an unmissable firework display that lights up the sky over Ludlow Castle.
