Artist feature 2013:
  • Bobby Womack
Sunday, June 30 on the West Holts stage
    • Bobby Womack and Damon Albarn to headline Glastonbury’s West Holts stage. The singer will be joined by The Bravest Band, which features Damon Albarn and XL Recordings boss Richard Russell. Other artists due to perform on the same stage across the weekend of June 28-30 include Chic, Public Enemy, The Weekend and Major Lazer. Soul singer will be joined by The Bravest Band on Sunday night of festival. The Bravest Man In The Universe is Bobby Womack’s first album of original material in eighteen years. It was co-produced by Damon Albarn and XL Recordings’ Richard Russell and recorded in three main sessions between October and December 2011; two were in Damon’s Studio 13 in West London, and the other was in New York’s Manhattan Center, which is situated above the legendary Hammerstein Ballroom, with a few extra sessions in London at the XL Studio and Richard’s own home studio. All ten tracks are co-written by the three plus Bobby’s longtime songwriting partner Harold Payne, except for radically rearranged spirituals “Deep River” and “Jubilee (Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around)”. There are striking vocal guest spots from Lana Del Rey on “Dayglo Reflection” and Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara on “Nothin’ Can Save You”.
A man whose talent as a singer, guitarist and composer is matched only by his self-lacerating honesty, Womack dismisses three albums he made at the turn of the millennium (a live album, a gospel album and a Christmas album) and sees his first album for XL Recordings as the first, real Bobby Womack album since 1994’s Resurrection. You see, for those three lost albums and his few live performances around that time, Bobby Womack wasn’t really there at all. “There was a Christmas album in 2000,” he recalls, dismissively, in a voice so dirty and cracked that it’s almost as musical as his singing voice. “But to be honest, I haven’t released an album in 18 years. I had given up on music. I didn’t have the desire that you have to have. I assumed that I’d stayed in the business too long… like an old fighter.”

Artist feature 2013:
  • Arcadia
    • Arcadia have taken off from their former home within the South East corner of the site and landed next to The Other Stage just in time for 2013’s festival! With mind boggling acrobatics, world class DJs and gigantic laser blasting, flame-throwing sculptures, this show is now out in the open and is one late night Glastonbury experience not to be missed! The Giant spider will be revving up around midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights with the jaw dropping “Arcadia Spectacular” show, followed by two solid hours of unadulterated, out-of-this-world, immersive audio-visual experiences to the soundtrack of some of the UK’s finest bass pounding DJs.
As if all the flames, lasers and the 30ft Spider stage weren’t making a big enough impact, Arcadia will also be collaborating with two extra ordinary performance artists; the duelling cavaliers - The Lords of Lightning are back with their extraordinary performance that harnesses 4 million volts of raw electricity through the power the mind-bending Tesla suits; as well as the thrilling display of the ultimate in fire manipulation with giant roaring Fire Tornado. There will be further demonstrations of magic of Tesla at the ARC Bar with brand new contraptions including electrically charged sparking speakers and pulsating plasma balls when Tesla meets Techno!
The Arcadia Spectacular show proves to be extremely popular, and with all the DJ headliners being kept top secret until onsite, people are urged to get there nice and early to grab the best spots situated within the flaming lampposts. This feast for the senses needs to be seen, and heard, to be truly believed!
    • Born from a love of scrap, fire and supreme craftsmanship, lifelong friends and artists Bertie Cole and Pip Rush formed Arcadia in 2007 and have since become known for putting on the definitive, out-of-this-world immersive festival experience. With their monstrous moveable sculptures, awe inspiring pyrotechnics, laser shows, gravity defying aerial performances and one heck of a pounding sound-system, Arcadia have flourished in their Glastonbury home over the past five years; building up an unrivalled reputation within the festival scene. As well as bafflingly brilliant sculptures, the Arcadia crew are also known for their mind bending, heavy duty bass bashing line-ups and as the ultimate rave stage in town.
