| Festival Description | This year’s Old Mutual Encounters Concert and Family Picnic at Spier Wine Estate hosts some of South Africa’s top artists at the trendy Stellenbosch wine estate. Parents are encouraged to bring their children along and enjoy this spectacular occasion with the family, as there will be special entertainment area for children where the facilities provide a safe environment and plenty of activities for kids, allowing parents to relax and enjoy the concert. Concert-goers are reminded that no braais or open fires are allowed on the wine estate, as well as any glass containers or bottles. No public parking will be allowed via the main entrance to Spier so patrons are encouraged to use the public parking area accessible from Annandale Road only. |

Festival Story:
In September 2004, at a darkened Kippies in Newtown, Old Mutual staged its first “Encounters” evening for 100 specially invited guests. The concept: take two artists from different musical or creative backgrounds, and give them the space to collaborate. Let them jam together in a rehearsal room for a couple of days and see what emerges. The result of that first collaboration was breathtaking. The stars for that inaugural performance were to be Arno Carstens and Gloria Bosman. But the real sensation was neither—but rather what was created in that space between them. It was the best of both worlds. A new creative space “neither mine nor yours, but ours”. The combination of Gloria’s scorching vocals and Arno’s raunchy stage act was electrifying. Encounters was born.
The magic of this series is that the performances are unique. They cannot be duplicated on any other night, on any other stage. Some of the artists may choose to work together again, but the magic of that first Encounter is the spark that lights the fire. Old Mutual Encounters is a project of Old Mutual, which is a Proudly South African company, and managed by Oppikoppi Productions.
