Festival Story:

In the Arts there is only Ability! It is the largest and longest standing disability arts festival in Australia, recognised nationally and internationally as a key stakeholder in the disability arts sector. The programme provides a dynamic, exciting, inclusive community celebration of ability held every October. The Awakenings festival challenges perceptions about people with a disability and embraces the true spirit of the Arts with an emphasis on creativity and independent thought. Its gift to its participants is a greater sense of confidence, a better quality of life and a means of self-expression. Therefore, it is a powerful vehicle for engendering social change. The festival has a strong grass roots philosophy offering opportunities from first time performances to professional performances. The festival has also become a true community festival and is embraced by the community of Horsham through in-kind and financial sponsorship, and supported by over 400 volunteers. Its patron is David Helfgott. There have been 846 registered performers from regional and metropolitan Victoria, and every state of Australia. Throughout the ten days of celebrations there have been over 11,500 attending 51 individual events.
