The Whare Flat Festival is unique due to its small size (around 500 participants), intimate, interactive gathering of international, national and local guests all mixed up with festival-goers from around New Zealand and the world. There are concerts running all day and every evening. All events take place under cover, therefore are not weather-dependent. There is the opportunity for audience participation in workshops, performances and dance.
The festival is held each year in the idyllic sylvan surroundings of the hills south of Dunedin at Waiora Scout Camp. There is a cafe that provides snack foods and hot and cold drinks. A bar and sausage sizzle also operates every evening (the famous Beer 'n' Barbeque Tent).
