Festival Description

The program of events runs the gamut of Jazz styles and flavours and the change of Festival timing from winter to autumn has provided us with the opportunity to introduce a first for the Festival—Jazz Alley. More than 60 national and local Jazz artists are featured at the Festival. International headliners have included Grammy award winning Norah Jones, Irish Jazz singer Mary Coughlan and Australia’s Jazz great James Morrison. Other overseas artists include Australian Jazz violinist George Washingmachine, American blues guitarist Kristina Olsen and Jazz guitarist Jack Wilkins. The diverse event schedule is sure to keep every Jazz fan entertained. From Jazz in the Hall, Jazz for Lunch, Jazz Alley, Jazz on Film to our Jazz Karaoke hour.

Participants 2007:
  • The festival runs for nine days and features a fantastic line-up of international performers as well as some of New Zealand’s best musicians.
    • Bonnie Raitt—has become an institution in American music, releasing 18 albums over the 30-year span of her musical career. She has won nine Grammy Awards and her 1991 Luck of the Draw album, featuring the hit single Something to Talk About, went seven-times platinum.
    • Julia Deans—lead singer in Fur Patrol, will make a foray into jazz and blues with songs full of harmony and intrigue, and explosively gorgeous vocals in a special concert of jazz standards and her own compositions.
    • James Morrison—Jazz virtuoso plays trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn, alto saxophone and piano with the New Zealand Army in a performance not to be missed on 17 April.
    • Tim Beveridge—one of NZ’s most exciting live performers, appears in concert with the legendary Russ Garcia and the 17-piece Neophonic Jazz Orchestra for one-off show featuring songs from the American Songbook.
    • Dave Dobbyn—makes an entry onto the jazz scene, playing for the first time with Tom Rainey and Trio.
    • The cabaret series features an assortment of international performers include Bob Malone (USA), Jan Preston (Australia), Michelle Nicolle Quartet (Australia), Roy Phillips (UK/NZ), Whirimako Black (NZ), Mary Coughlan (Ireland), Pacific Underground (NZ), and Paul Ubana Jones (UK/NZ).
    • The Lichfield Lanes will come alive with the sounds of jazz and blues and the boogie woogie during a weekend of free outdoor jazz.
