The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe first organized the Jikinya Dance festival in 2002 as a competitive festival among school-aged children. The aim is to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the country by showcasing various traditional dances. The festival involves primary school pupils from throughout Zimbabwe as a way to encourage the youth to appreciate and perform traditional Zimbabwean dances in a competitive program.
