Festival Description

The 2010 Cork Midsummer Festival will explode into the city in June with 16 days and nights of music and mayhem. Running from 12th – 27th June, this 21st century festival will be bigger and better than ever before, spanning a jam-packed two weeks, with experiences to appeal to everyone.

The 2010 festival will see the return of the ever popular Irish Examiner Spiegeltent which will host an abundance of shows featuring new surprises as well as seeing the return of much-loved favourites! Corcadorca will return with a new production which promises to be as unique as ever. Outdoor installations and interactive entertainment are among some of the gems of Cork Midsummer Festival 2010, taking the festival to the people, with events, gigs, and performances spanning across theatre, dance, music, and art.

Programming 2010:
  • The festival has developed over the last few years to become one of the biggest and most groundbreaking festivals in the country, this year seeing the exciting commissions of new work by both international and local artists.
    • Dance Marathon, from the European Premiere, the participatory dance show that is taking the world by storm, where people can dance the night away at this fun and fantastic show based on the dance marathons of the 1930s
    • medEia, Corcadorca’s highly anticipated new work — a retelling of the Greek tragedy Medea, weaving the poetic language of the original text with pop culture images and lyrics from bands including Joy Division, The Beatles and Madonna
    • Out Of Order, the acclaimed Belgian Theatre Company Victoria (Campo), will be working with the festival on the participatory project, Out Of Order, in which local Cork Youth with no experience in theatre will create an extraordinary group portrait of their own experiences.
    • A showcase of Cork theatre, The Cork International Season will present a showcase of Cork theatre, including festival commissions by exciting emerging theatre makers including Hammergrin (K: The Iowa Project) with their site specific piece Hollander and Asylum Productions (Cleaner) presenting the innovative fusion of human puppetry and physical theatre, Red Lola. Other acclaimed Cork theatre production include Raymond Scannell’s Mimic and Crazy Dog Audio Theatre’s The People’s Republic of Gerry Murphy, who will be joined in the festival by Dublin’s Making Strange Theatre Company with their critically acclaimed one-woman show Luck that will be travelling to the Edinburgh Fringe later this year amongst others.
    • Local theatre, this year, Midsummer will present a snapshot of some of the most exciting theatre coming out of Scotland today, including David Greig’s aptly titled Midsummer, produced by the groundbreaking Traverse Theatre — Scotland’s premier theatre for new work, an unmissable piece of poignant romantic comedy; the 2008 Fringe First winner Slick, described by The Scotsman as “a cutting-edge comic-strip show for theatre that combines the pathos of Oliver Twist with the savage satire of Viz magazine” and magical theatrical walk through Fitzgerald’s Park Susurrus.
    • Contemporary dance highlights, include Sol Picó Dance Company, who will return to Cork after the triumphant opening event of Cork 2005 with a new piece that fuses rock and flamenco to create a meditation on aging; and Croi Glan Integrated Dance Company with a dance double bill of works from Ireland’s leading choreographer David Bolger and Croi Glan’s artistic Director Tara Brandel: On The Wall/Fall, featuring both able bodied and wheelchair using dancers.
    • Visual arts, cutting edge visual arts sees an extended focus this year after Spencer Tunick’s installation in 2008, with Austrian artist Christian Eisenberger’s thought-provoking installation Vietnam Scene, a recreation of the famous photograph of nine-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc running from a cloud of Napalm and David Sherry’s Complaints, a live performance work that invites the public to air their grievances on just about anything.
    • Opening/Closing events, include two very exciting family events, the AIB Street Performance World Championship will visit Cork for the first time this year, with 31 world-class street performers descending on Fitzgerald’s Park for a free weekend of fun, whilst the Cork gourmet delights will be on offer on the closing Sunday, with an inaugural food Feasta featuring the best of local artisan produce.
    • The Irish Examiner Spiegeltent, will once again present an ecclectic mix of music and laughter, highlights including gigs by David Holmes and Camille O’Sullivan, comedy by Maeve Higgins and Dead Cat Bounce, and introducing the Lucky 7 Cabaret Club, a nightly carnival of international variety entertainment including magician and ‘Countdown’ Dictionary Corner regular Mr. Paul Zenon; NYC’s bawdy burlesque duo The Wau Wau Sisters, Kiwi vaudevillian prankster, The Boy with Tape on His Face and host Mikey Martins from Le Clique amongst others.
