| Festival Description |
One of the many drama festivals of full length plays that take place in various cities, towns and villages throughout Ireland, culminating the Amateur Drama League with qualifying points for the All-Ireland Drama Finals which take place each year during May in Athlone. Prior to the first Drama Festival in 1947, a Drama Féis was held for four consecutive years (1943 - 1946). With the exception of 2001 the Committee have organized a Drama Festival every year. From its humble beginnings, in an age of paraffin lamps, dry batteries and simple double-sided sets, and at a time when local groups simply went out "to do a play", the Festival has developed into one of the foremost showpieces of the amateur drama movement in Ireland. The venue for the 1949 festival was the newly opened Astor Cinema, Scariff, where it was held until 1985. The festival was moved to Scariff Community College Hall in 1986 and has been there since. |
