Every summer, a grand Arts Festival is held in Akureyri with a programme of numerous concerts, art exhibitions, and other events of an artistic nature. In fact, there are new events and happenings every day. The programme is eclectic and of the kind of mixed bag that will only upset those with an obsessive compulsive bent to their cultural intake. It is the product of happenstance in the sense that it makes the most of what it has and what it can get, mixing fine art with crafts, so-called “high” art with the naïve variety and in truly Icelandic style, the festival provides for children's tastes as well.
