Festival Description

The 14th Kalamata International Dance Festival features ten days of performances from local and international artists, along with a contemporary dance workshop and parallel events, such as concerts, lectures, choreographers’ talks. Performances take place at the Kalamata Castle Amphitheatre, the Municipal Cultural Centre, the Municipal Regional Theatre and the Polykladikon Lyceum Gym.

Dance Workshop 2008:
  • The Kalamata International Dance Centre is organising a Contemporary Dance workshop led by Iñaki Azpillaga
    Inaki Azpillaga was born in Spain, where Basque folk dance was his first approach to dance. He began ballet studies and soon after he discovered other disciplines such as Jazz, Modern & Contemporary dance, and mime. In addtion, he studied composition, improvisation and lighting design at Nikolais/Louis school in New York. During his professional career as a dancer, he took part in operas, theatre pieces, installations indoor and outdoors, and small dance productions. He worked with the National Ballet Company of Spain and with choreographers such as Mathilde Monnier, Marga Guergue, Blanca Calvo & La Ribot. Azpillaga won the first prize in the VI Choreographic Contest of Madrid, creating thus his own production “Diálogo de sordos” (Deaf Dialogues) with its premier in Madrid. After a meeting with Wim Vandekeybus, he decided to go to Brussels to work with him in the creations “Mountains made of barking”, ”Alle grossen decken sich zu”, “Bereft of a blissful union” and in the revivals “Her body doesn’t fit her soul”, and “What the body does not remember”. Since 1997, he has been working as assistant and repetitor to Mr. Vandekeybus in regular bases, currently assisting the last creation MENSKE (2007). He teaches workshops and gives dance lessons to professionals all around Europe (ImPulsTanz Wien, PARTS, SEAD, HJS , TQW , Mulhouse, Lier HID) and to companies in Brussels: Ultima Vez, Need Co, Charleroi/Danses, Damaged Goods.
  • Participants will be able to attend the festival performances with a reduced ticket.

    • FEE: €240 (The fee will be settled in full on the starting day of the workshop)
    • REGISTRATION: €100. Registration deadline is June 20, 2008
