Each summer the Erofili Theatre, at the Fortezza, is the site for the Renaissance Festival of Rethymnon. The programme of the Festival is full of theatre performances presented by significant theatre groups from Greece and includes music, dance and visual art events. Over the course of the years all the works of Cretan playwrights have been performed as well as a arge variety of plays by Shakespeare, Moliere, Goldoni and others. Furthermore musicians from all over the world came to Rethymnon toperform a wide range of music, starting from the period of the Renaissance to modern times.
